Isi artikel
A devastating earthquake struck Padang Sumatera and its surrounding at the late afternoon of September 30th, 2010. A magnitude of 7,9 earthquake has caused tremendous damage on numerous engineered buildings, and surprisingly among them were academic buildings of two to six storey. The occurrence of heavy damage or collapse of the engineered buildings was for sure an unexpected event, since this type of building was not expected to behave so. For a better safety assurance in the future, the cause of this disastrous event needs to be investigated. This paper presents a brief result of assessment focused on buildings belong to several academic institutions in Padang. Observation shows that severe structural damaged commonly occurred at the first storey of the buildings. Several factors were identified to contribute for the damage, i.e.: poor quality of material, improper structural and foundation systems, insufficient main and lateral steel reinforcements and poor detailing. To mitigate earthquake disaster in the future, better quality of building construction is desperately needed in Padang. This includes quality improvement of structural design, construction system and workmanship, and also intensifies the enforcement of code and standard regulations in design and construction. Improvement on Competencies as well as technical capability for whom are responsible for building safety assurance are also necessary.
