This study attempts to explore the ways in which a depiction of a national character in the Indonesian online news is put to use in the texts by metaphorical conceptualization. By employing the cognitive semantic framework it seeks an explanation to how the national character metaphors are generalized into the metaphor systems. Three important categories of the national character metaphors found are NATIONAL CHARACTER AS CONSTRUCTION, NATIONAL CHARACTER AS KNOWLEDGE, and NATIONAL CHARACTER AS VALUES. The latter metaphor may have subcategories such as NATIONAL CHARACTER AS BRAVERY, NATIONAL CHARACTER AS NOBILITY and others, all of which may be generalized into HUMAN metaphor system.
