Isi artikel
Dating relationships are examined for a representative sample of randomly selected college freshmen (N = 280). Comparisons of self-esteem, mastery, use of coping strategies, and preference of negotiation styles are made between individuals currently in violent and nonviolent dating relationships. This research adds to the literature information about what occurs during and after disagreement between college student dating partners. The findings compliment and build on past research concerning initiation of and response to acts of violence. Findings indicate that the negotiation style of Negative Affect and the coping strategies of Confrontation and Sodal Support discriminate between partners in violent and nonviolent dating relationships. In addition, evidence is provided that a theoretical framework integrating the resource aspects of social-exchange theory is useful in the study of dating violence. Implications of these results are discussed from the perspective of providing recommendations to practitioners and educators.
