Background : Nosocomial infection, also known as health care associated infections
(HAIs) since 2008 is an infection that is acquired when treated in hospital or other
health care facility, it is one infection that causes increased in morbidity and
mortality rate in hospital. In Atma Jaya Hospital, the isolation of 7,69 % of clinical
sample is identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae. 87 % of HAIs is caused by Gram
negative bacteria such as: Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus
(MRSA), vancomycin resistant Enterococcus ( VRE ). Bacteria transmission
especially K. pneumoniae from hospital environment is potential to cause HAIs.
Research approach: To determine the acquisition of Klebsiella pneumoniae in Atma
Jaya Hospital environment.
Methods : This study is a descriptive study with cross sectional approach. The
specimens were swabs from various surface of medical instrument, wall, floor, health
care workers and patient in ICU, operating room, hospital ward, emergency
department, and kitchen in Atma Jaya hospital. MacConkey agar is used for
isolation meanwhile the identification used biochemical test (Microbact 12 A and 12
Result : From 92 samples collected, 27 samples are obtained from intensive care
unit (ICU), 21 samples from operating room, 14 samples from hospital ward, 19
samples from emergency department, and 11 samples from kitchen. 3 samples were
identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae and 2 samples each identified as Klebsiella
oxytoca and Klebsiella ozaenae.
Conclusion : Klebsiella pneumoniae was found on the surface of medical instrument,
table in the nurse station, water, and cutlery in Atma Jaya hospital.
