Abstract
Background. There was a decrease in the onset of menarche in modern times compared to the 19th century. It is influenced by high consumption of energy-dense food i.e. fast foods that correlates with high calories and fats, a decrease in physical activity, and also the maternal age of menarche. Objective. To find the relationship between fast food consumption, maternal age of menarche and maternal characteristics with age of menarche. Method. The design of this study was cross sectional, the total sample were 69 and were chosen by using non-random sampling of all students in grade V until VIII.. Fast food consumption, maternal age of menarche and maternal characteristics data were collected by questionnaire. Data were analyzed by Spearman and Chi Square. Result. Out of 69 students, 53 students (76.8%) were categorized as early menarche and the average age of menarche is 10.8 years. There are 34 students (49.2%) consume fast food regularly ranging from four to six times a week. The average maternal age of menarche is 11.9 years and 26 mothers (37,7%) were categorized as early menarche. There is a correlation between fast food consumption (r=-0.919; p=0.00) and maternal age of menarche (r=0.543; p=0.00) with age of menarche. There were no significant difference between maternal characteristics (family income and maternal education level) with age of menarche (p=1.000). Conclusion. There is a correlation between fast food consumption and maternal age of menarche with age of menarche. There is no significant difference between maternal characteristics with age of menarche.
