We propose and develop a scheduling methodology for a class of discrete event systems with capacity constraints based on the concept of model predictive control. We target repetitive, multipleinput, multipleoutput, and directed acyclic graph structured systems. Using a specific discrete algebra known as maxplus algebra, we describe the system’s behavior by a pair of linear equations referred to as the statespace representation. Maxplus algebra is an algebraic system on which the max and plus operations are defined as addition and multiplication in conventional algebra, respectively. Using this representation, the processing completion time of current and future jobs can be predicted by giving the previous job’s state and processing start time. Assuming that the system’s performance can be improved by paying additional cost, we adjust the processing times and determine material feeding times for which the target output times can be observed. The main contribution of this research is twofold, 1: For systems with capacity constraints, we derived an output prediction equation as functions of adjustable variables in a recursive form, 2: Regarding the construct for the system’s representation, we improved the structure to accomplish general operations which are essential for adjusting the processing times.
