Isi artikelAs living in Jakarta becomes more demanding, a number of women are forced to make a living by taking a job as street vendors. Furthermore, they remain to be responsible as wives and mothers. The dual roles among street vendors need to be studied further because according to Canal Gilligan, women focus more on cam reasoning in considering what to do. The goal of this study is to review the dual roles of women street vendors through a framework of Gilligan's stages of moral development in women. Using a qualitative approach, this research interviewed four women street vendors in performing their dual roles. The participants purposively selected have variations in their origin and status of their husbands' occupations. The results of this study indicates that each participant perform their double role as a worker and a housewife properly if assisted by their significant others. Nevertheless, there am some differences on how they accommodate the demands of both roles and personal aspirations. These differences are influenced by the culture of their origin, although economic factors and experiences with all the pressures affected them as well. Participants with greater economic pressures tend not to make the job as their personal aspirations. This condition puts them on the lower stage of Gilligan's moral reasoning compared to the others with better economic conditions. Further studies need to explore the application of Gilligan's theory of moral development in an economically depressed and oppressed sub-group of population.
