In a sociocultural atmosphere where mothers are regarded as the primary caregiver responsible for their children's upbringing, the critical importance of infant mother attachment is readily accepted. However as this paper attempts to suggest, the crititcal importance of infant mother attachment is to be revisited through exploration of the biological bases of attachment, infant father attachment, impact of working mother on attachment, clinical implications of attachment, and internal working model. Results form a number of studies offer significant support to the idea that, depite its importance, infant mother attachment is not that critical for a child's healthy development.
