The Role of Bahasa Indonesia in EFL Classrooms: A Slightly Neglected Paradigm in Reinforcing Students’ Learning Abilities

The teaching of English especially in EFL classrooms often brings unique phenomenon to the nature of the teaching and learning contexts in the classrooms. The unique phenomenon among others are the interference of L1 is often obvious and unavoidable in the classrooms, teachers are often faced with a dilemma not to or to include L1 in their teaching process and classroom tendencies mostly reveal that to some extends students show enthusiasm and more understanding of the English language with the interference of L1. This study thus aimed at finding the contextual use of L1 in EFL classrooms and at portraying the influence of L1 on the learning process. The study involved two teachers and 49 students of teenagers, Intermediate and Higher intermediate levels of competence. The data was gathered through classroom observations and audio recordings which was then coded, transcribed and analyzed, through teacher interviews which was transcribed, compared and contrasted and through teacher questionnaire which was analyzed and elaborated. The study revealed that both teachers and students used Bahasa Indonesia in the classrooms for the following contextual uses: to explain difficult words, to explain grammatical concepts, to give instructions, to ask questions, to give responds and to reexplain teachers’ instructions. The study also indicated that the higher the students’ level of competence was, the lower frequencies of Bahasa Indonesia was used while the lower the students’ level of competence was, the higher frequencies of Bahasa Indonesia was used. The study also further revealed that the use of Bahasa Indonesia in the classrooms positively affected the learning atmosphere and the students’ learning.
