This paper studies Indonesian economic development, with an emphasis on regional income distribution. We conduct an inter-provincial analysis to measure regional income disparities for the period from 1994 through 1997. With regard to Indonesia’s rapid economic development during the 1970s to 1980s, we expand this analysis by examining the shift in income distribution for the period from the 1970s to 1990s. Finally, in an attempt to build an understanding of the current interaction between regional income distribution and regional economic development, we look at the Special Region of Yogyakarta as a case study because of its impressive growth.
