Isi artikelObjective : To compare and study distribustion of Escherichia coli and ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in patients with and without indwelling catheters. Material and Methods : Sample in this study was 194 patients in the department of urology, Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya fulfilling the inclusion criteria, randomly allocated into two groups. Ninety-seven patients had indwelling catheters and 97 were without catheters. The bacteria studied were escherichia coli and klebsiella pneumoniae which aquired resistance due to ESBL. Urine specimens were taken from all subjects and culture results were recorded. Results : A higher incidence of eschericia coli growth was higher in patients with catheters compared to the control group, (51,2% vs 48,8%). Precentage of ESBL negative Klebsiella pneumoniae was lower in catheterized patients compared to patients without catheters (38,9% vs 61,1%). Proportion of patients with ESBL negative cultures was lower compared to control (38,9% vs 27,3%). Conclusion : THere was no significant defference in incidence of infection by escherichia coli and ESBL-producing klebsiella pneumoniae between patients with and without catheters. Incidence of urinary tract infection by escherichia coli and ESBL producing Klebsiella pneumoniae was higher amnong patients with catheters in the Urology Department. There is clonal transmission of Escherichia coli and ESBL-producing klebsiella pneumoniae between urology patients.
