Birth defects and genetic disease are the leading causes of infant mortality in the United States and in most developed countries. They are a major contributor to developmental disabilities, representing the fifth leading cause of disability years. About 25% of birth defects and genetic diseases can be prevented by using existing technology. Registries provide investigators with basic information to identify the causes of birth defects and develop prevention strategies.
