This study aims to explore the creative processes of traditional music artists in Indonesia. It is assumed that no such general creative processes in composing a music. The music composition produced is always be connected strongly with how the artists are reflecting themselves and their surrounding social cultural backgrounds. Using in depth interviews, the participants of this study consists of five artists from various regions in Indonesia: Aceh, Boyolali, Bali, Yogyakarta, and Sunda. The findings showed that creative process in composing music is such a long and complex experience for the artists, expressing the core of the phenomena they want to describe as well as their responsibility to contribute something substantial for the universe through their masterpiece. The creative process emerged not only when the artists composed the music, but also when they performed it in front of the audiences. There is a lot of room for changing or modifying the masterpiece based on the interaction with audiences when they performed the music. As the results, the music is a sort of personal fullfilment expression of the artists, while social and cultural context was the resources of the ideas of their arts as well as the final objectives of their creative processes.
