Interactional management is one domain which is receiving attention in the communicative competence literature (Wiemann 1977). A basic management skill is the collaborative production of coherent discourse. This paper describes the acquisition of coherence production skills by preschool children. The focus is largely upon formal coherence production, the repetition of lexical or structural constituents from previous utterances.
