Isi artikelThis study aims to investigate the energy absorption and impact strength of sandwich composite panel reinforced gunny bag fiber with wood core. The surface fracture is also investigated to observe the fracture characteristic. The composite panel was produced using a press mold method and the fiber volume fraction of the skin composite was 30%. The skin composite contains random and woven roving fibers as reinforcement. The core thickness was varied 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm. The specimens were produced according ASTM D 5942. The testing of the specimens were conducted Charpy impact testers. The result shows that the increasing of core thickness increases the energy absorption and impact strength of the sandwich composite panels. The impact strength of the panels using 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm of the core thickness increases 85%, 138% and 192% compared to that of the panels using 5 mm of core thickness (0.013 J/mm 2 ), respectively. The fracture surfaces indicate 3 steps failure i.e. the failure of the skin composite in back side, the failure of the core and the failure of the skin composite in front side. The panel which has low impact strength shows delaminating failure type .
