Recent economic indicator have reinforced my sense of the severity of the continuing slump in consumer spending. According to gross domestic product statistic, household consumption in July-September 2006 pluged by 3.8% from the pprevious quarter, the largest such dip since the spring of 1997, just after the consumption tax was raised from 3% to 5%. The long rainy spell in July has been cited as the main cause of this drop, but retailers reported bo rebound from August on ; the slump has been persisting.
