Isi artikelDevelopment is inherently epigenetic. In the absence of changes to the DNA sequence, blastocyst cells alter their gene-expression programmes as they differentiate into the many cell types that constitute an organism. Gene-expression programmes can be 'locked in' by epigenetic marks such as DNA methylation; however, during development, there is also a requirement for flexibility and reversibility. And there is great interest in how DNA methylation can be removed.
