Epigenetics is riding a wave of popularity. But what is epigenetics? Typically, it is defined as heritable changes in gene function that are not due to changes in DNA sequence. However, in its current incarnation, epigenetics encompasses the effects on gene regulation of chromatin 'marks' (modifications to the DNA or its associated proteins), RNA interference and the higher-order structure of chromosomes - effects that are not necessarily heritable. A revised definition of epigenetics could help to unify current ideas.
