Management of comeal ulcer is still difficult and in some complicated cases comeal perforation is occurred. Recently, additional therapy with amniotic membrane transplantation is introduced. The aim of this study is to evaluate the result of amniotic membrane transplantation on the management of comeal ulcer. A retrospective review of medical record was perfonned in comeal ulcer patients who underwent amniotic membrane transplantation. between October 2002 December 2003 in Syaiful Anwar Hospital Malang. Patients data noted were identities, predisposition factor of the ulcers, diameter and depth of ulcer, length of therapy, length 'of epithelisation, initial and final visual acuity. There were 11 comeal ulcer patients who underwent amniotic membrane transplantation. Ten from eleven patients (90.9%) healed in 4.4 weeks after transplantation. In patient with an ulcer that has a diameter less than 6 mm and depth of ulcer less than 213 of comeal thickness, there was a good result with improvement of visual acuity on seven patients (63.6%). Three patients (27.3%) healed with a good wound healing but without improvement of visual acuity due to a wide ulcer and decemetocele present on the central comea. One patient (9.1%) with hypopion failed to heal and went through comeal perforation with endophthalmitis. The success rate of amniotic membrane transplantation on comeal ulcer in this study was 90.9 % in 4.4 weeks, and the success of amniotic membrane transplantation depended on diameter, depth and severity of comeal ulcers. Amniotic membrane transplantation is an altemative treatment for comeal ulcer that unresponsive to the medication.
