Isi artikelDiabetic retinopathy is estimated to be the most frequent cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20-74 years in industrialized country. In Indonesia, the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy does not exist yet. Certain factors may influence the onset or progresiveness of diabetes-related complications. The prevalence of retinopathy is strongly linked with the duration of diabetes. Screening techniques are utillized to identify asymptomatic individuals at high risk from individuals at low risk for develoving diabetes. The screening test includes not only diagnostic test but is also followed with treatment and follow-up. There should be a simple, safe, precise; and valid method for screening test. . Several alternative screening methods exist: direct ophthalmoscopy, fundus photography and slit-lamp biomicroscopy. Modality of screening with ophthalmoscopy and dilated pupil by ophthalmologist is effective. Several studies have reported the cost effectiveness of screening for retinopathy. Preventing blindness in diabetes is an important goal which will require support of a wide range of stakeholders and even the govemment. It is widely recommended that all persons with diabetes mellitus be regularly screened for diabetic retinopathy.
