Isi artikelSyphilis is one of the most contagious sexually transmitted diseases in the world.National statistics for Treponematosis in Saudi Arabia remains sketchy. This study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of syphilis in randomly selected Saudi pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics in main hospitals of Makkah city, and to compare the results with other reports from Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. One thousand and eighty pregnant women were included in the study. Median age of the respondents was 28.5 years. A total of 1080 serum samples were tested for Treponema pallidum. Active syphilis was considered when the rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test was reactive with a positive Treponema pallidum haemagglutination (TPHA) test, any reactive RPR titer being considered significant. Treponema pallidum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies were detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique among patients with reactive RPR and/or positive TPHA test. Of the 1080 women tested only 12 were found to have syphilis; a prevalence rate of 1.11%. The present study has documented that, the prevalence of syphilis is low in antenatal care population in Makkah city, Saudi Arabia.
