Isi artikelThis paper tries to critically look into one of the benefits of using literary texts to teach English in Indonesia. It hopes to show that the study of literatures is a material force for the students to enjoy a process-oriented way of seeing texts and situations. It also underlines the belief that by learning literature the students’ English competency would automatically be taken care of The discussion on the role of the exposure and interrogation of how literary texts be assigned in the classroom would lead to the techniques and approaches used in the classroom. To teach the beginning level as this paper wishes to deal with, for example, we may use fables or traditional stories. The focus of the lesson is neither the vocabulary nor the grammar. As such, it is not important whether or not the students understand every word used; it is not imperative eitherfor them to know the grammar applied in the stories. In fact, it is an opportunity for them to read an extended text with the objective for them to enjoy the reading and generally comprehend the sequence of events. Asfor the more advanced classes, it is recommended to construct the deeper meaning of the work.
