Between 1983 and 1994, the number of full - time, large - firm workers increased at nearly twice the rate of increase in the number of full - time, small - firm workers. Over the same period the average hourly wages of small - firm workers rose much more than those of large - firm workers. The relative wage gains of small - firm workers are partly (if not mostly) a result of steep increases in the cost of employer - provided health insurance.
