Protective effect of curcumiae on endothelial cell were studied in cholesterol-fedrabbits. The cholesterol-rich diet markedly increased Malondialdehyde (MDA) in the plasma, as reflected by Thiobarbituric Acid-Reactive Substances (TBARS) and decreased endothelium-depended vascular relaxations to acetycholine compared to vessels from normal rabbits. In cholesterol-fed rabbits, curcumine treatment decreased MDA in plasma production and increased endothelium-dependent relaxations to acetycholine. These results suggest that dietary treatment of rabbits with curcumine may prevent superoxide anion (02) induced inactivation of endothelium-dependent relaxing factor (EDRF) and improve the endothelium-dependent relaxation to acetylcholine in the aortic blood vessels in cholesterol-fed rabbits.
