Evaluating a coursebook is necessary to judge its merits although there is no absolute good or bad of the fitness for he required purposes. In this paper, the writer discusses the rationale and the principles of evaluating materials, and then compares four ideas, given by the experts in the field, of the way how to evaluate a coursebook to judge the possible usefulness of the book to be used or is being used. Each opinion gives a list of criteria intended to meet the learner's needs, but all of them should contain all aspects of language to be taught and learned equipping the learners for real life language use.
