Isi artikelThis article takes an economist's approach - that free markets generally produce the most desirable outcomes - to examine whether the trends in U. S. energy conservation and independence are a cause for national concern. Although U. S. energy consumption and oil imports are rising, the economist's approach offers little justification for placing wither energy independence of conservation at the heart of U. S energy policy. Environmental problems associated with energy use may merit a policy response, but the most effective policies would be dirrected at the pollutants rather than enegy use.
