The so - called EC 1992 program, designed to remove the remaining barriers to the free movement of goods, services, capital and people, has been largely completed, and important developments have taken place in the fields of environment and telecommunications. Two large issues loom on the horizon : the establishment of an economic and monetary union, including a single currency, and the accession of a number of central european countries.
