Isi artikelThe european single market remains imperfect, although advances have been made in reducing barriers between countries. The recent recession has distorted its effects on trade, but investment patterns have changed markedly, with cross - border mergers and acquisitions escalating, and substantial restructuring is taking place in agriculture and textiles. Membership of the european union could now rise by 60 percent with significant effects on intra - european trade. Trade between europe and the rest of the world is increasingly subject to free trade arrangements, in which there is a potential commonality with NAFTA. A trans atlantic trade agreements is therefore a real prospect.
