The article explores how a pastor with convictions regarding the permanence of marriage can effectively counsel persons considering divorce or remarriage. Since a counselor’s attitudes on moral and social issues frequently determine how he/she relates to persons involved in these issues, a pastor-counselor needs to clarify his/her own theological and professional understandings. The purpose of this paper is to provide this needed understanding and to give guidance in receiving as church members persons who have been divorced and remarried. Pastors with training in counseling frequently find a conflict between their biblical understanding of divorce and remarriage and the current sociological and psychological approach to these issues. The problem is that of dealing redemptively with persons caught in irretrievable marriage and divorce and at the same time being true to a high view of marriage. The traditional approach is inadequate because it does not serve the current needs of persons caught in problem marriages and divorce. I believe that an alternative to the traditional approach can be found which will provide a workable solution for these persons based on both the biblical view of marriage commitment and the dynamics of their individual situations.
