Today, medicine is surging forward onto the information superhighway with increasing focus on capitation, cost containment, critical pathways, and outcome analysis. In applying these principles to surgery, taking an ax to the trunk of the tree entitled “the acute abdomen” is not a cost-effective step for pruning the individual branches of varied abdominal pathologic conditions. An analysis of the common procedure of appendectomy may allow surgeons to acquire skills that will be necessary in the cost-effective management of patients with all varieties of acute abdominal pathologic conditions.
