The number of online degree programs offered by universities, both within the United States and in other countries around the globe, has expanded remarkably. Recent research (Nielson, 1997; Pond, 2002; Swail & Kampits, 2001; Twigg, 2001) indicates that this rapid expansion has exceeded our understanding of how to plan and organize these programs effectively.
