Ischemia limited to the colon is a well-recognized clinical entity that often occurs spontaneously or is secondary to a variety of occlusive or nonocciusive causes. A spectrum of disease is associated with colon ischemia. The ischemic injury can be mild and reversible, result in chronic symptomatic colitis or stricture, or can be fulimant and severe and cause colon infarction. A high index of suspicion is needed to make the diagnosis, and aggressive management is crucial to minimize the extent of colon injury and to reduce the otherwise high mortality rate in hospitalized patients.
