Isi artikelInjuries to the colon and rectum caused by radiation therapy are uncommon but challenging clinical problems. The pathophysiology and the risk factors for the development of the various types of acute and chronic injuries are discussed. Thorough evaluation of the patient to determine the extent of the injury and the presence of concomitant lesions and to exclude the possibility of recurrent malignancy is urged. Although colostomy remains a valuable and frequently used mode of treatment, it is not the sole alternative when surgical intervention is required. Operative management focuses on providing healthy, nonradiated tissues to the injured area to provide adequate blood supply and to promote healing. Several surgical alternatives are discussed.
