Laparoscopic cholecystectomy altered the treatment of suspected common bile duct calculi. Preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and endoscopic sphincterotomy supplanted operative common bile duct exploration. The emergence of techniques of laparoscopic common bile duct exploration through the cystic duct or through choledochotomy has decreased preoperative reliance on endoscopic sphincterotomy.
