Isi artikel
There are several options available to patients who require surgery for ulcerative colitis. Although many patients today favor a pelvic pouch procedure the other alternatives, which include total proctocolectomy and ileostomy or continent Kock ileostomy and colectomy and ileorectal anastomosis, still have a role. All the operations have both advantages and disadvantages, with none of them being the “ideal” operation. Thus, because patients’ concerns, lifestyles, and expectations differ, it is important that patients be informed fully of the options and that they play a role in the surgical decision making.
