Recent advances in endoscopic and percutaneous techniques have made possible a multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of patients with biliary injuries. The goal of therapy for injuries of the bile duct is not necessarily to avoid surgery but to achieve the best long-term results in the most cost-effective manner with the least morbidity and mortality. The treatment plan should be tailored to the individual patient based on the type, level, and extent of bile duct injury; the timing of diagnosis; the overall status of the patient; and the available expertise.
