Extra-anatomic arterial bypass is used most commonly in the treatment of infected prosthetic grafts or as an alternative less stressful operation for patients at high risk for more conventional reconstructions. This article reviews the development of these procedures, especially axillofemoral and femoral-femoral bypass, and discusses both the technical details and the expected results using current operative approaches.
