Techniques of hepatic parenchymal transection, including newer modalities such as the argon beam coagulator, contact Nd:YAG laser, and the ultrasonic dissector, are discussed. The laser as a means of in situ interstitial ablation of hepatic tumors is compared with other competing techniques. The promise of laser hyperthermia and radiofrequency electrodesiccation are compared to cryosurgery and alcohol injection as potential means to ablate liver tumors without surgery
