Isi artikelThe effectiveness of radiation therapy as an adjuvant to surgery for primary colorectal cancers, as sole treatment for rectal cancer, and in the management of unresectable or recurrent colorectal cancers is reviewed. Because the natural history of colorectal cancer is one of both locoregional and disseminated growth, many current regimens combine local treatments, such as surgery and radiation therapy, with systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy. There is evidence that radiation reduces the risk of local tumor recurrence when used as an adjuvant to surgery, and enables the preservation of anorectal function when combined with conservative surgery. The combination of adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy has led to improved survival rates for patients with rectal cancer, and this strategy now is being tested for colon cancer.
