There is strong epidemiologic and experimental evidence to support a role for diet in the etiology of colorectal cancer. The data, however, are conflicting and confusing. This partly reflects methodologic difficulties in nutritional studies. High-fat, high-calorie, low-fiber diets are associated positively with colorectal cancer, and a variety of micronutrients, including vitamins and trace elements, appear to be protective. The specific dietary risk factors for colorectal cancer remain unclear.
