Atherectomy—the removal of atheroma from diseased arteries either percutaneously or through a small arteriotomy remote from the diseased site—has several theoretical advantages over transluminal angioscopy. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the four atherectomv devices currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.
