This article reviews necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), the most common gastrointestinal emergency in the newborn. Factors responsible for NEC include intestinal ischemia, bacterial overgrowth, and especially, permaturity and enteral feedings. The precise timing of and indications for surgery are unsettled but overall mortality remains at 20% to 40%.
