Adenocarcinomas of the stomach that invade only the mucosa or submucosa, irrespective of regional lymph node metastasis, constitute early gastric cancers. Patients with this form of gastric malignancy have an excellent prognosis following surgical resection, in contradistinction to patients with more advanced stomach tumors. Although mass screening measures have increased the prevalence of early gastric cancer and curability of adenocarcinoma of the stomach in Japan, the incidence of this problem and cost effectiveness make a similar strategy impractical in the Western World.
