An aggressive diagnostic and therapeutic approach to acute mesenteric ischemia can dramatically lower the mortality of this lethal disease. The cornerstones of this approach are the earlier and more liberal use of angiography and the use of intra-arterial infusions of vasodilators in the treatment of both nonocclusive and occlusive mesentenic ischemia.
