Reperfusion of ischemic intestine leads to a sequence of events that paradoxically results in tissue injury. Reperfusion following short periods of ischemia causes alterations in microvascular permeability, whereas reperfusion after longer ischemic episodes leads to a disruption of the mucosal barrier. The primary media-tors of the reperfusion-induced tissue injury appear to be reactive oxygen metabolites and polymorphonuclear leukocytes.
