Isi artikel
This artide reports on an empirical study on the relationship between the collocational competence of 100 Iranian EFL learners and their performance on open-ended and multiple-choice doze tests as an overall language proficiency measure. The target language proficiency level of the subjects was examined through their performance on a TOEFL test. The subjects' collocational competence was assessed through their performance on a 50item test consisting of grammatical and lexical collocations. The results of the statistical analyses show that there is a significant relationship between collocational competence and performance on doze tests. Assuming the doze test to be an effective measure, the findings point to the importance of improving EFL/ESL learners' collocational knowledge to enhance their proficiency level in the target language.
