This article provides an overview of the various treatments available for the palliation of dysphagia associated with advanced esophageal cancer. The authors specifically review external beam radiation therapy, endoluminal brachytherapy, endoluminal stenting, yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser ablation, and photodynamic therapy. The decision as to which therapy to recommend for a patient should be based on a thorough understanding of the therapies and must be individualized for each patient and on the experience of the endoscopist or surgeon.
