Isi artikelEfforts by the top japanese automakers to improve overseas earnings have been overwhelmed by the deep recession udirng 1991 - 94 and by losses in japan and the yen's sharp rise in 1993 - 94. The auto companies are suffering a cyclical drop in earnings, which is mild by comparison with downturns in detroit and europe but bad enough to force a major restructuring of all firms. A couple of automakers are fighting for their survival. Compounding the cyclical damage are major, long - term structural changes that the japanese auto producers must undertake if they are to remain major players on the world stage.
