Neck pain most often results from conditions related to the cervical spine. Sources of neck pain include arthritic changes; radiculopathy, or compression of a nerve root; myelopathy, or compression of the cervical spinal cord; injury; and irritation of the supporting paraspinal muscles. The mechanism of many of the causes is not well understood.
