In March 2005, the US Food Administration (FDA) approved a once-monthly dosing regimen of ibandronate (Bonivia) for the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis and reduction of vertebral fractures. Clinical trials have shown that once-monthly dosing is more effective than once-daily dosing in increasing bone meneral density (BMD) at all major skeletal sites prine to osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures, and that the tolerability of the once-monthly dosing regimen is comparable with that of the once-daily dosing regimen.
